Paul Gallen has over 25 years experience of leading composites developments in automotive and other sectors. He has contributed to industry roadmaps and programmes for automotive and composite industries over the last 8 years, and played an instrumental role in setting up the Automotive Composite Group within the UK’s Composite Leadership Forum.
Paul strongly believes that composites, used in the right place, can make better products, where multi-functionality, improved safety or lighter weight provide benefits. Lightweighting alone does not provide a large enough benefit case as we move towards zero-carbon vehicles, and the emphasis has changed towards enabling better BEVs and FCEVs and reducing energy use through the vehicle’s life.
Paul is Sales Director, Automotive Composites, for Hankuk Composite UK Ltd, who produce a wide range of composite materials optimised for low-carbon mobility.
As an engineer by education for mechanical engineering, I have got into contact with polymers and plastics in 2015 at Next generation Recycling Machines, a designer and manufacturer of thermoplastics recycling plants. In 2016 already I have started at Isovolta as a sales manager for the composite materials in commercial aviation. In 2021 I have taken over the responsibility to lead the sales team which I have already handed over and focus on the business development also outside aviation now. It is more important than ever before to diversify. This is my mission right now.
Isovolta manufactures prepregs with the focus on flammability and temperature resistance as well as impact and transmissivity performance. In the aviation sector we mainly serve the interior industry. However, we also have other fields in which we are active. In the Isovolta Group many other industries (automotive, electronics, electric machines etc.) are served as well.
My career began with Delta Air Lines on the operational side of the business where I received technical experience in airframe, engine, APU, landing gear and thrust reverser maintenance. While at Delta, I finished my undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and my MBA from Georgia State University. I ventured into general aviation and ran a 145 repair station for Hawker Beechcraft that included a maintenance base with full repair capabilities. Additionally, I participated in a special missions program while at Hawker to build a CLS program for the Iraq Air Force, during Desert Storm. My other special missions’ assignment included developing a corrosion control program for the Israeli Air Force. I am currently in business development with Satair, who is fully-owned by Airbus. My passion is to find innovative technology that applies to today's aircraft that directly affects the sustainability of our industry.
