Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.  Arul earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, and an MBA in Strategy and Finance from New York University's Stern School of Business in New York, NY.

He retired from Grünenthal at the end of June 2018 after 16 years having been responsible for global operations, quality, manufacturing, and supply chain. Prior to that he led manufacturing, quality and R&D organizations at Hoechst AG in Germany and the Netherlands. At Celanese AG in the USA he was site director, global six sigma champion, and leader of the corporate On-Stream-Reliability Program.
