The study also stated, the microorganisms living in probiotic formulations like yogurt can cause blood infections in few cases as indicated by a study which cautions the use of the product in the hospital\u2019s ICU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6 ICU cases of bacteremia was\ncompared by the researchers with another 16 patients in the ICU who didn\u2019t have\nthe infection but were receiving probiotics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly Flett, co-author from\nNovant Health Eastover Paediatrics, said &#8220;We wanted to see if there were factors\nwe could identify clinically, so we could make recommendations about giving\nprobiotics in the ICU,&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-author of the study, Thomas\nSandora said &#8220;We know from prior studies that certain patients are at\nhigher risk for infection from probiotics &#8212; usually those with compromised\nimmune systems, or problems with their intestinal tracts that would allow\nprobiotics to get into the bloodstream,&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further added &#8220;But these\npatients did not have any of those risk factors.
