Si \u2013 Yi Chen of the USC Norris\nComprehensive Cancer Center, professor in the Department of Molecular\nMicrobiology and Immunology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, and senior\nauthor of the study said, \u201cThis is a major improvement\u201d. He further added\n\u201cWe\u2019ve made a new CAR molecule that\u2019s just as efficient at killing cancer\ncells, but it works more slowly and with less toxicity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No serious side effects were\nproduced in 25 patients who had lymphoma that recurred after previous\ntreatments with the advanced version of CAR T therapy. Even though the study\nwas designed to look at safety and not effectiveness, out of eleven 6\nparticipants went into total cure receiving a commonly used dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CAR T-cell therapies were\napproved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of\nadvanced lymphomas and leukemia.\n\nMr. Chen said, \u201cThe improved CAR T cells\nproliferated and differentiated into memory cells in the patients, thus\nproducing a potent and long-lasting anti-tumour effect without causing\ntoxicities.\u201d He further added \u201cToxicities are currently the biggest barrier to\nthe use of CAR T-cell therapy. My hope is that this safer version of CAR T cell\ntherapy could someday be administered to patients in outpatient settings.\u201d\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
